The Beliefs Keeping You Small

The Mask Trap — Part 3 of 5
The Beliefs Keeping You Small.
Nobody said these sentences out loud. That's why they still run the show.
Every mask needs a reason to stay on. Nobody keeps wearing something that heavy without a story underneath telling them it's necessary. So let's drag a few of those stories into daylight.
"If they see the real me, they'll leave."
This one's old. Older than real estate, probably older than your first job. It sounds practical — protect the relationship, keep the client, don't rock the boat — but underneath it's a belief about your own acceptability. It says the unedited you is a risk. That belief didn't arrive with data. It arrived with a moment, probably years back, when being fully yourself cost you something. One moment became a rule. The rule's been running ever since, uncontested.
"My worth is whatever I closed this month."
This is the one that makes the whole business feel like a mood ring. Good month, good person. Slow month, something's wrong with you. Nobody would say this belief out loud in a sentence like that — it sounds absurd written down — but watch how agents actually talk about themselves after a dry spell. The language gives it away every time.
"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life."
— Carl Jung.
"Strong opinions are bad for business."
Partly true, partly a trap. Yes, some opinions cost you a deal here or there. But the belief usually grows past its evidence. It stops being "some opinions are risky" and becomes "having any real opinion at all is dangerous." That's a much bigger sentence than the facts support, and it's the one quietly running your listing presentations.
"I have to earn the right to take up space."
This is the quiet one, the one under the other two. It says your presence, your voice, your actual read on a situation needs to be justified before it's allowed. Most agents living inside this belief don't even notice it as a belief. They just experience it as constant, low-grade effort — the tax you pay before you're permitted to speak plainly.
None of these beliefs are stupid. They made sense once, given what you knew at the time. But a belief that made sense at twenty-four doesn't automatically deserve tenure for life. It just has it, by default, because nobody ever came back to check its work.
That's the job now. Not smashing the belief. Just checking its work.
Next, we build something to replace it with — a way of holding your own worth that isn't tied to your last closing, your last good review, or the mood of the room you just walked out of.
