What Attraction Actually Is.
Start with the lighthouse, since it's the metaphor attraction always gets, usually sneered at. A lighthouse doesn't chase ships, goes the saying, and the hustlers hear passivity: a smug tower, standing around, waiting.
Except think about what a lighthouse actually is. Someone surveyed the coastline for the exact point of maximum visibility. Someone built the thing, stone by stone, against weather that wanted it gone. Someone climbs the stairs and tends the light, every single night, whether ships come or not, and the keeper's logbook doesn't have a single entry that says sat back, waited. A lighthouse is not the absence of effort. It's effort relocated: away from chasing what floats past, and into becoming impossible to miss.
"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." - Milton Berle
That's attraction in seven words. Notice the verb. Nobody's waiting for the knock; you're in the doorway trade now. And building doors is work, which is the part the strawman is designed to hide from you.
Because here's my honest confession on behalf of the attraction camp: it is not easier. In some ways it's harder, and I'd rather you hear that from a friend.
Interruption is brutally hard on the ego and the evenings, but it's simple. Dial the numbers, absorb the rejection, repeat. There's a comfort in that simplicity; you always know what to do next, even when what to do next is awful. Attraction asks something more demanding. It asks you to figure out what you actually think, and say it in public. To write the article, record the conversation, share the perspective, week after week, long before there's any evidence anyone is reading. To become genuinely useful and visibly yourself in your community, consistently, without a dopamine hit of instant response. The interrupter gets an answer, however unpleasant, within seconds of dialling. The attractor plants things and has to trust the season.
That's not sitting back. Sitting back doesn't have a publishing schedule. What it is, is work without an audience at first, and that's precisely the filter. Most agents can't tolerate effort that doesn't pay this week, which is why the hustle model will always have customers, and why the attraction lane stays so gloriously uncrowded.
"What you seek is seeking you." - Rumi
Eight hundred years old, and it reads like a strategy document. Because the deepest shift in attraction isn't tactical, it's directional. Interruption points all your energy outward at people who haven't asked. Attraction points the energy into becoming someone worth finding, and then makes the finding easy.
The seller you want is out there right now, wanting an agent exactly like the one you're capable of being. Your job was never to hunt her down at dinner. Your job is to be findable, unmistakably, when she comes looking. And she is looking. People always are. What they're not doing is answering unknown numbers.
The Tell
One more thing about the "sit back and wait" sermon, and it's the tell that gives the game away.
Ask yourself who benefits from you believing that visibility must be bought with interruption. The lead vendors selling you names of people, many of whom never asked to be a lead. The trainers selling scripts for conversations nobody wants. The whole apparatus that invoices your dependence monthly. The strawman in the recliner isn't there to protect your business. He's there to protect theirs.
Say it plainly: attraction is not the absence of hustle. It's hustle with the direction reversed: build the lighthouse, tend the light, do the unglamorous nightly climb. The ships you want are already at sea, looking for exactly that.
Fine, you say. I'm sold on the direction. But build the lighthouse where? Because the industry has an answer for that too: social media, the great free stage. And next time I have to tell you something slightly heartbreaking about that stage, involving who actually owns it, and what they charge for the microphone.
